Millstone Landscapes Ltd has recently completed the third stage of a five year planting scheme of an urban park area.  The project will eventually see us plant over a hundred thousand tree whips and specimen trees.  This stage of the planting was carried out from Jan 2014 to the end of Feb 2014, planting in excess of twenty thousand tree whips. The conditions that we had to work in were some of the worst we have encountered in our companies history.  The photographs show just how bad the conditions were on site.   Photograph 1 shows us moving mulch across the site to the planting areas.  The wet conditions meant that we had to increase the density of mulch dramatically and work off boards when planting.  Photographs 2,3 & 4 show the conditions during Jan 2014.  The mulch was moved by our 20 tonne excavator which was continually getting bogged down. Photograph 5 shows the soaking wet ground conditions.  The surface was graded over with our excavator before mulching, which helped soak up some of the surface water.  Photograph 6 shows the completed planting zone.  Each whip was protected with a shelter that will remain in place for a five year period until the plants have matured. As you can see, through much hard work and tolerance, we still succeeded in completing the area to within our clients deadline.

Harewood Common Project, Andover

Millstone Landscapes Ltd have just completed a large community project at a development near Andover for Persimmon Homes South Coast. The works involved the creation of a vast community area for the residents of the development named Harewood Common. The Common, which was originally an agricultural field, backs onto a mature woodland area; Harewood Forest. The field was left neglected for many years prior to our works. We started by clearing the whole area of wild vegetation and then seeding with 25,000 m2 of Wild flower grass seed.  Wild Poppy’s were added  into the seed mix to commemorate this years First World War Centenary.  We planted over 12,000 native whips along the boundary of the Woodland.  Every whip was protected by a tree shelter and mulched at the base to discourage weed growth and to retain moisture presence around the root system. Each planting zone was protected by a boundary of rabbit fencing, installed by ourselves, using tanalised timber rails and rabbit netting.  On one boundary, over 200+ heavy standard trees were planted at 5 meter centres, shown on the above photograph. We commenced the project in early November of last year. Working in very difficult conditions, from the unusually wet Winter, we persisted to work through the elements and managed to achieve our deadline and scheduled target for our client. The photographs show some of the planting carried out. The projects cost was in excess of £250,000 to landscape the whole area. By planting a vast number of native whip species and semi mature trees, we have created an area which will establish and be used and enjoyed by many future generations. The common, now completed, will be maintained by us for a five year period to ensure a successfull and healthy establishment. By successfully carrying out these projects, we continue to prove that our experience and expertise in completing these larger schemes is esssential to ensure our clients targets and deadlines are achieved well within schedule.
